What Makes the Open University of Israel (OUI) Unique
Distance Learning
OUI's leading edge Distance Learning technologies enable students to learn on their own time schedule at any location. OUI's open admissions policy makes all students eligible. The opportunities enabled by a higher education are real for all OUI's students regardless of age, gender or socio-economic background.
- Self-Study: OUI's 600 courses are unique because they are designed primarily for self-study. Courses include group tutorials, laboratory work or field trips and periodic symposia. Study materials are written especially for OUI students. As the largest academic press in Israel, OUI publishes over one million books, annually, for use by OUI students and faculty of Israel's leading universities.
- Distance Learning: The sophisticated technology used to deliver information eliminates the need for a central campus where lecturers and students gather on a uniform schedule. OUI's 70 computer-equipped Study Centers scattered throughout Israel and the Former Soviet Union support students residing in remote desert towns and villages, every day, every hour.
Technology
- Advanced educational technologies drive Distance Learning.
Many courses have websites that provide additional study aids, multimedia and video materials. Websites are the gateway for individual and group communication between students and tutors. For some courses, computer- tutorials almost entirely replace face-to-face tutorials through broadband internet communications. - OUI's PE'ER Opening Treasures of the Mind offers free public access to OUI's most valuable asset...the knowledge contained in OUI's books. Students can access electronically formatted textbooks (many in audio format for the disabled) and study materials, including video lectures, presentations and interactive exercises. PE'ER raises M.I.T.’s Open CourseWare Consortium to the next level by providing online access without compensation or intent for profit. OUI’s contribution to free public academic study is forward thinking, innovative and altruistic.
Open Admissions, the Only Open Admissions University in Israel
OUI's open admissions policy waives the matriculation requirement or the certificate requirement from another educational institution for admission. An applicant's personal ambition, motivation self-discipline and, ultimately, their academic achievement is the key to their success. Given OUI's physical and virtual supportive learning environment, it is up to the students themselves to study on their own, actively participate in group learning activities, meet deadlines and fulfill all course requirements.
- In 1996, the OUI expanded its Bachelor’s degree program to offer programs leading to a Master’s degree. In contrast to the undergraduate studies, admission to graduate studies is contingent upon fulfillment of entrance requirements.
